Hooked on School Days

Since 2004, Hooked on School Days (HSD) has mobilized all of Quebec to highlight the value of staying in school and encouraging academic success.

Over the years, HSD has become a society-wide movement to increase awareness and encouragement, reminding us that when it comes to helping youth and adults continue their educational journey, every little gesture counts.

This week-long event in the third week of February falls at a crucial time in the school year, when students may experience a drop in energy and motivation.
So HSD is the perfect opportunity to relight the flame of perseverance, listen, encourage, and show our pride and support for anyone persevering in their studies.

Objectives

HSD is a broad awareness and mobilization campaign aimed at helping to change social norms so that:

  • A majority of Québec’s population deems that staying in school and getting an education is essential to a society’s positive development.
  • Each of us takes action to encourage young people to stay in school.
  • A majority of stakeholders (political decision-makers and employers) feel that they can play an active role in encouraging young people aged 0 to 20 to continue their education and earn a diploma or a qualification.
  • A majority of Québec’s population feels that helping young people aged 0 to 20 stay in school and earn a diploma or qualification should be something that happens both inside and outside the school.

Where it all started

The idea for Hooked on School Days was born in the Montérégie in 2004. Spearheaded by Pôle Réussite Montérégie, the initiative aimed to meet needs expressed by young people during youth commissions in school dropout and perseverance.

The first Hooked on School Day in the Montérégie was held on February 21, 2005, a seminal moment, marking the beginnings of a collective movement that has continued to expand and to mobilize Quebec society around the shared message that every young person is worthy of support along their path to success. Today, HSD events are run by all 18 regional consulting authorities and their many partners.

Why take part in HSD?

Because every act of encouragement counts.

Participating in HSD shows youth in school and adults in training that they don’t have to face their challenges alone. And by contributing to a stronger society, where everyone can reach their potential, you’re also investing in our collective future.

Every individual who perseveres to earn their diploma is walking a path toward a better future and helping to break the dropout cycle. By encouraging students to stay in school, we are proclaiming together that success is everybody’s business.
